In a recent workshop, we had the opportunity to explore the unique leadership skills identified by Millennials & Gen Z, as well as Baby Boomers and Gen X. Surprisingly, amidst the apparent differences, a striking resemblance emerges, revealing that effective leadership is not bound by age but rather grounded in timeless qualities.
Interpersonal Leadership Skills:
The younger generation highlighted the importance of empathy, strong communication, collaboration, open-mindedness, and a coaching mindset. On the flip side, Baby Boomers and Gen X emphasized listening, humility, patience, openness to growth, self-awareness, bravery, commitment, and dedication. What's evident is that the ability to understand, connect, and communicate with others is a universal requirement for effective leadership, regardless of the era one belongs to.
Organizational Leadership Skills:
Both groups identified visionary thinking, effective communication, transparency, ethical behavior, and strategic planning as essential organizational leadership skills. The younger generation adds qualities like being driven and efficient, while the more seasoned leaders underscore the importance of being prepared, consistent, culturally aligned, and inclusive. These parallels highlight a common understanding that successful leaders must navigate their organizations with a clear vision, integrity, and a strategic mindset.
Technical Leadership Skills:
When it comes to technical skills, the consensus is on the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, innovation, and problem-solving. Millennials & Gen Z value being experienced and educated, while Baby Boomers and Gen X emphasize competence, education, and openness to learning. The shared emphasis on staying relevant, embracing change, and seeking knowledge speaks to the universality of technical leadership requirements.
